Andy Pengelly Departs Lions FC

WITH ONE PREMIERSHIP, TWO CHAMPIONSHIPS, FOUR SEASONS, AND OVER 100 GOALS SCORED, ANDY PENGELLY DEPARTS LIONS FC AS A CLUB LEGEND

After a fantastic four-year spell in orange & blue, Andy Pengelly has officially departed the club at the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Andy is a former Lions FC Junior, and commenced his senior career playing with Western Pride in the NPL, shining in a dominant two-year spell between 2017 & 2018. He scored 14 goals in 27 NPL games and two goals in three cup games.

During his two seasons, Western Pride achieved back-to-back third-place finishes, with their crowning moment coming in 2017 in a famous late 2-1 Grand Final victory over Moreton Bay Jets! It was the first time in 31 years that an Ipswich-based club had been crowned Champions at the highest level in Queensland.

Ahead of the 2019 season in Queensland, Andy was signed by the Brisbane Strikers, making a remarkable impact in his lone season at the club. Pengelly was a total weapon in the final third, bagging a stunning 41 goals in 26 league appearances in the yellow & blue!

A murderous display against Sunshine Coast fire saw Andy Pengelly strike a club record nine goals in a single match en route to the Golden Boot. He was also integral in the Strikers’ inspired 2019 Australia Cup (formerly FFA Cup) run that saw them reach the Semi-Finals.

Andy notched 11 goals in eight matches, including a decisive goal in their Round of 32 clash against Wellington Phoenix that eventually ended in a penalty shootout cupset victory! He struck the opening goal in the Semi-Finals against Melbourne City in an eventual defeat, and ended his lone season with an insane 52 goals in just 34 appearances.

Supramacy on the Queensland stage drew international attention, and Andy Pengelly signed his first professional contract with Singapore Premier League outfit the Lion City Sailors ahead of the 2020 season. Despite scoring on his debut, Andy was forced to return to Australia due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, signing for Peninsula Power midway through the season.

Andy bagged 14 goals in 15 appearances as Peninsula Power went on to win their first National Premier League title! He re-signed in the 2021 season, winning back-to-back NPL Premierships.

In his only full season in Redcliffe, Andy scored 30 goals in 27 NPL appearances, earning the NPL Golden Boot and NPL Player of the Year award. He departed the club having scored 47 goals in 46 appearances. It was the second time he had left a club with more goals scored than games played, and a testament to his unmatched goalscoring ability.

And in 2022, he returned home to Luxury Paints Stadium, signing for Lions FC.

Andy was a Lions Junior from U8s through to U15s, and made his return debut against Gold Coast Knights to get the 2022 season underway. While the scoreline went against us that day, Andy marked his return with his 100th NPL goal.

His first victory came against his former club, Peninsula Power, with Andy finding the back of the net in a dramatic 4-3 win at Luxury Paints Stadium!

Eight goals in his first five games set the tempo, including a hattrick against his former club Brisbane Strikers in the Australia Cup. He continued his lethal form with a four-goal haul against SWQ Thunder in the Australia Cup and a hattrick against Capalaba Bulldogs at home in the league.

The crowning moment of his maiden season was a Premiership-winning hattrick against Olympic FC in a 3-2 top-of-the-table victory to clinch our first NPL Premiership since 2019! For Andy, it was a third consecutive NPL Premiership.

Our season ended against Olympic in the Semi-Finals at home. Andy equalised in a heated clash, but a stoppage-time goal condemned us to a 3-2 defeat.

Andy ended the 2022 season with 19 NPL goals and 7 Australia Cup goals, earning the Mollee Medal at our Lions end-of-season Presentation Night.

The 2023 season was far tougher for our Lions Men. We started our campaign by winning the Football Foundation Cup against Redlands United. The opening NPL game of the season, which doubled as the Cup Final, ended 1-1 at Luxury Paints Stadium, with our Lions Men winning the title following a penalty shootout!

A brace against Peninsula Power in a 3-1 victory, a four-goal haul in a 6-1 Australia Cup win over Logan Village, a match-winning double against Moreton Bay Jets in a 2-1 win, and a decisive strike in a 2-0 victory over Olympic FC were among Andy’s finest performances of the season.

He ended the 2023 campaign with 17 NPL Goals and 7 Australia Cup goals, scoring his 50th goal for the club in our Preliminary Final defeat against Brisbane City.

In 2024, Andy completed his best season in orange & blue. A historic treble, and his most prolific campaign in front of goal.

We started the 2024 season with an 8-1 Kappa Pro Series victory over Moreton City Excelsior. Andy found the back of the net, and then scored three times in our next two Pro Series fixtures.

He scored the winning goal in a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Rochedale Rovers, followed up with a brace in our 6-0 Brisbane Classico demolition, and scored twice in a 4-2 win over Moreton City Excelsior.

Andy maintained a consistent goalscoring streak across the NPL, Kappa Pro Series, Kappa Queensland Cup, and Australia Cup, allowing us to remain dangerous and competitive across all tournaments.

In the Kappa Pro Series, he racked up seven goals in the tournament, including a crucial Semi-Final equaliser in a 4-2 victory over Gold Coast Knights. We went on to win our first Pro Series title with a 3-2 victory over Gold Coast United.

In the Queensland Cup, he delivered his best. Two goals in the Semi-Finals against Olympic FC saw us progress with a 2-1 win, and a powerful brace in the Final against Moreton City Excelsior steered us towards a 3-0 victory and an inaugural QLD Cup title. Our second piece of silverware.

Our Australia Cup run was certainly memorable. Under sheets of rain in Western Australia, Andy Pengelly struck the equaliser in a 4-1 Round of 32 win against Perth Redstar. In front of thousands of fans at Luxury Paints Stadium, we faced Western Sydney Wanderers in the Round of 16.

We progressed to the NPL Grand Final with a 1-0 victory over Gold Coast Knights, and were crowned Champions for a record fourth time with a 1-0 win over Moreton City Excelsior at Suncorp Stadium.

Andy ended the season with 12 NPL Goals, 7 Kappa Pro Series Goals, 9 Queensland Cup Goals, and 1 Australia Cup goals. Outstanding!

He ended the season by representing the Queensland state team, scoring twice as our QLD Men defeated the NSW Men 2-0 at Imperial Corp Stadium.

Three goals in four Kappa Pro Series games marked another fast start to the season, and he quickly reached a historic milestone, scoring his 150th NPL goal in April!

Andy scored a momentum-shifting goal as we fought from 3-1 down to defeat Brisbane City 4-3 at Luxury Paints Stadium, and bagged a match-winning brace in a 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar Youth. Another double helped us overcome the Wynnum Wolves 4-1, and a brilliant hattrick saw us defeat the Sunshine Coast Wanderers 4-0 to stay alive in a fierce title race against Moreton City Excelsior.

In the Kappa Pro Series, Andy scored a critical late brace that saw our Lions Men fight from behind to defeat Brisbane Roar Academy 3-2 at Meakin Park. He went on to lift his first trophy of the season when we triumphed 1-0 over Moreton City Excelsior in the Cup Final at Perry Park!

With 16 goals in 20 NPL games, Andy wrapped up his first Golden Boot in Lions colours and his third Golden Boot in total. Three Golden Boots across three different clubs, and over 150 league goals to show for it!

Despite conceding the Premiership to Moreton City on the final day of the season, our Lions Men regrouped and defeated Peninsula Power 3-0 in the Semi-Finals to progress to Perry Park. In Andy Pengelly’s final game for the club, we defeated Moreton City Excelsior 2-1 to claim our fifth NPL Championship!

As a club, we are incredibly thankful to Andy Pengelly for his immense contributions to the club and to football in Queensland. Across four seasons, he has demonstrated an unmatched eye for goal, scoring 104 goals in 130 appearances and lifting seven titles with the club. He has been named in the NPL Team of the Season five times, and has played an integral part in one of the most successful periods in the club’s history and will forever be remembered as a club legend.

Thank you, Andy, and best of luck with your next challenge!
