Lions FC 4 (Price 22′; Clough 26′; Connors 64′, 70′)
Sunshine Coast Wanderers 2 (Avery 54′; Jensen 90+2′)
HT 2-0
New signing Shae Connors struck twice as Lions FC progressed to the next round of the inaugural Kappa Women’s Super Cup at Lions Stadium on Saturday evening.
A rare Megan Price strike opened the scoring midway through the half for the hosts. Price smashing the ball past Wanderers keeper Tamika Fudge, who managed to get a hand to the ball, from outside the box after Cannon Clough had squared the ball to her.
Clough herself, doubled the lead four minutes later with a sublime stooping header from Tegan Riding’s free kick into the box that beat Fudge all ends up.
The visitors should have reduced the deficit in first half added time when Lions coughed up possession and Tiffany Scarff flashed the ball over when well placed.
Wanderers did however strike back shortly after the interval. A solid run from Raelle Avery looked to have been thwarted by Price and Clough but Clough’s attempted pass out ricocheted off Avery who ran on and dispatched the ball beyond Isabella Shuttleworth in the Lions goal.
Midway through the second term Connors struck twice in six minutes to kill off the contest. Both strikes coming courtesy of trademark powerful runs to the byeline from Tegan Riding.
Connors’s first coming from the left side where Riding crossed into the six yard box for Connors to guide the ball in from close range and on 70 minutes from the right side, in almost identical fashion. This time a more drilled ball into the edge of the six yard box for Connors to stroke in.
Amy Gunston forced a good save from Fudge late in the game before a late strike from Jensen in added time, following Shuttleworth’s give away to her, saw Wanderers earn their second goal of the night, be it too late.
