KPS R1: Luke Broderick’s Late Strike Earns Our First Win Of 2025

LUKE BRODERICK FINDS A LATE WINNER AS OUR LIONS MEN EDGE THE WOLVES IN A TENSE 1-0 VICTORY

We start our 2025 campaign well-matched against a Wynnum Wolves side that only looks to be growing stronger. With equal blows exchanged across the opening quarter-hour, our Lions Men started to elevate the intensity and take control over the flow of the game.

Andy Pengelly forced a sharp save at the near post after an improvised glancing header from the corner, while Shaun Carlos and Alex Fiechtner also put pressure on the Wynnum keeper.

Finn Beakhurst was forced to withdraw with an injury, and we entered the break level, goalless, and strongly poised to build our momentum in the second half.

Cardiff Pond made a reliable save early after the restart. Preventing a Wolves transition from causing any headaches. Minutes after entering the field from the bench, Luke Broderick almost assisted an Andy Pengelly breakthrough, but our #9’s effort steered narrowly over the woodwork.

We stayed composed under pressure as the pace of the game picked up and continued to increase. Numerous chances came our way, but we struggled to hit the target with a clean connection.

A handball saw our Lions Men awarded a spot-kick, but Andy Pengelly’s strike was met with a firm save. He reacted quickly, rounded the keeper on his first touch, and without luck on his side, clattered his follow-up effort into the right post.

With less than ten minutes remaining and a goalless introduction to 2025 looming, Luke Broderick found the pivotal goal. A powerful run down the right flank after leaving his man in the dust, allowing him to engage the keeper at a slender angle and pick the bottom corner at the far post. A lethal strike to win the match!

We held on with strength for the final ten minutes and almost doubled our lead as Trent Millard hooked a curling strike into the top left crossbar. Our first competitive game of 2025 ends in our favour, and the new season begins with a result that we can build upon.
