A second-half brace from Alex Fiechtner saw our Lions Men defeat St. George Willawong 3-0 away from home to complete Group F at the summit.
With a lone point enough to secure top spot, our Lions Men walked onto the field at St. George’s Park with a straightforward objective. Dan Barber named a heavily rotated Starting XI, and the game began before a lively Friday evening crowd.
We expected a challenge, but fortune favoured us, and three minutes in, Mitch Hore rolled home one of the easiest finishes of his life. A blistering run down the left flank from Tresor Christophe, but his cross was blocked, and the clearance was belted straight back into him, wrong-footing the keeper and deflecting across the face of goal for Mitch to poke home calmly.

It wasn’t a moment that saw the floodgates open, and the St. George defence stood firm in the centre, making it difficult to find openings in & around the box. Shaun Carlos tested the keeper with a stinging effort from the edge of the box, and Alex Fiechtner surged in for the rebound, but collided with the keeper.
Jerson Lagos tried to pick the bottom right corner with a swift freekick from distance, but the keeper reacted quickly to palm the ball away from the target. Moments later, Shaun forced an unreal diving save, attempting to catch the keeper off his line with a ruthless half-volley from the edge of the box.
It was a physical, intense, and arduous first half. When the whistle sounded, we walked off the field with a 1-0 lead to expand upon.
Back in play on Camden Road, and the first chance fell quickly. Alex Irwin flicked a front-post header over the keeper, but Alex Fiechtner’s back-post header was saved. On a rare attack from the hosts, Jacson Riley was forced to make a tidy save at his near post, and moments later, Jerson Lagos arrowed a missile over the crossbar from thirty yards.
With a triple substitution after the hour mark, our Lions Men finally made their dominance pay. A brilliant passage of play that saw Rahmat Akbari create a goal out of nothing, winning the ball on the edge of the box, skipping by three defenders, and touching the ball into the path of a clinical Alex Fiechtner strike into the bottom left corner!

We maintained control, despite the game becoming increasingly physical and cynical.
Alex Fiechtner again was the difference-maker, wrapping up a rounded performance with a snapshot into the bottom right corner from distance following a slick touch to beat his defender!

With the final whistle, and a 3-0 victory to celebrate, our Lions Men walked off the field with nine points in three games, top spot secured, and a home Quarter Final booked for next weekend.

Dan Barber shared his thoughts on the game and our progression to the Quarter Finals next week!
“I’m pleased for the players first and foremost. Obviously, our target in the Pro Series Group Stage was to qualify for the Quarter Finals, which we’ve done tonight by winning all three games. And as you said, uncomfortably, but it was definitely a hard-earned victory.
It’s a small pitch here. St. George were quite organised to make it as difficult as possible. But we found the solutions and scored a couple of excellent goals as well.
Yeah, so it was probably a couple of tactical tweaks that we made at halftime, both with and without the ball. We needed to be a little bit more aggressive without the ball, first of all. Still playing a lot of long direct balls, so we needed more pressure on the ball higher up the pitch. That seemed to work better in the second half. When we were able to turn the ball over higher in more advanced areas.
The boys and the subs obviously made a massive impact when they came on. A fresh pair of legs, and I think we showed the fitness levels and quality in the second half in particular.”
