KPS Round #5: Important Win Secured

LIONS MEN GRIND OUT A DIFFICULT WIN AGAINST REDLANDS UNITED IN THE KAPPA PRO SERIES

Goals from Matt Ridenton, Andy Pengelly, and Jack Skinner saw our Lions Men secure an important win at home.

We started the match with a heavily rotated lineup consisting of academy graduates Freddy Babbage and Luca Damianakis. We started with energy, creating an early rhythm in the attacking phases. Alwin Komolong made a piercing ball to Matt Ridenton, who escalated an early counterattack with an improvised backheel pass into Joshua Brindell-South’s path.

Hassan Ramazani finds time on the edge of the box to set and dispatch a powerful shot towards the bottom right corner. His effort is poked wide for a corner. James Enticknap found Luke Broderick in an open pocket of space inside the box, but his attempted cross was caught cleanly.

A great attack ended unexpectedly after Luke Broderick lost his footing and tripped over. He was running onto a chipped through-ball send from Matt Ridenton after feinting the ball around his marker and releasing the ball.

The breakthrough came out of nowhere. Matt Ridenton made it 1-0 after capitalising on an unfocused keeper, sprinting into the box before slide-tackling the ball into the back of the net. Clean contact with the ball after the keeper took too long to dispatch the pass. A lesson in pressing.

We entered the breakthrough with a slender 1-0 lead. Luca Damianakis attempted to double that margin by scuttling across two defenders and attempting to finesse the ball into the top right corner from range. The keeper saved with authority.

Andy Pengelly dragged a bullet of a strike across the face of goal from the right side, before Luke Broderick clipped the ball over the crossbar after a smart run into space. We continued to pile on the pressure. Luca Damianakis looked certain to score, tapping home at the back post after a sharp cross. Somehow, the keeper deflected the shot with his boot, pushing it into the left post before the ball was cleared by the defence.

Redlands broke even minutes after the hour mark. A fine individual effort that saw the Redlands forward skirt past two defenders before slipping the ball inside the near post. Andy Pengelly reacted within minutes, directing a flat shot into the bottom left corner after a clinical cross from the right.

Our nine came close to doubling our lead with an emphatic header from the centre, but a firm first from the keeper denied us. Jack Skinner wrapped up the game with an open-body finish under the keeper after a mind-blowing, defence-splitting, diagonal through-ball from James Enticknap. The definition of ‘threading the needle’.

We saw out an important 3-1 victory at home.
