KQC R4: We Secure Progression Via Penalties

CARDIFF POND SAVED THREE SPOT-KICKS AS OUR LIONS MEN ELIMINATED A DEFIANT ROBINA CITY SIDE ON PENALTIES AFTER A HARD-FOUGHT 2-2 DRAW AT HOME

If we were expecting a routine midweek cup tie, Robina City had other plans. A fast start saw the visitors snatch the lead inside fifteen minutes, catching us in transition to open the scoring on Field 2.

We looked for a quick response and almost found it after a magnificent run from Andy Pengelly saw him flick the ball to Alex Fiechtner, but the Robina defence dealt with the danger effectively. In the twentieth minute, the FQPL2 side snatched a second goal, and the challenge was set.

Fred Oyet forced a save from the keeper as we upped the ante, and Andy Pengelly halved the deficit with a brilliant strike from distance!

Several key chances escaped us as we battled for an equaliser before half-time, but Robina stood firm, and we entered the interval trailing 2-1 at home.

With a fiery and physical first half behind us, our Lions Men clicked quickly into gear after the restart. Within five minutes, Alex Fiechtner drew level after a superb run to escape the defence, and a measured finish to beat the keeper!

Fred Oyet forced two fine saves on the hour mark as we tried to force the breakthrough, and Alex Fiechtner saw a goal disallowed for an offside. Pranav Vallabh forced yet another save, and with ten minutes remaining, Alex Fiechtner was brought down inside the box and awarded a spot-kick.

With the chance to give our Lions Men the lead for the first time, Alex Fiechtner drilled his shot towards the bottom corner and saw it saved by the keeper. He attempted to beat the keeper on his follow-up, but the loose ball was claimed by the shot-stopper.

Nothing separated the sides after ninety minutes, and the game restarted with extra-time.

Alex Fiechtner struck the crossbar with ten minutes remaining, and after 120 minutes without a breakthrough, the game would be decided on penalties.

With our penalty specialist, Cardiff Pond, between the sticks, there could only be one winner. Despite a strong effort from Robina City, whose keeper saved two spot-kicks to match keep his side level, Cardiff Pond made a third match-winning save to give our boys a 5-4 win after seven rounds of spot-kicks!
