It took Extra-Time, but our Lions Men prevailed against a strong Holland Park Hawks outfit, with three brilliant strikes securing a 4-1 win at Luxury Paints Stadium
After our Friday Night Kappa Pro Series Final victory at Goodwin Park, our Lions Men decided they hadn’t experienced enough Cup action yet. So, a Tuesday night Kappa Queensland Cup battle against Holland Park Hawks was the only way to get our fix.
We started with rhythm, and Alex Fiechtner flashed an early chance after darting under his defender to attack an aerial ball. A smooth piece of football between Harvey Pope and Mitch Hore ended with Harvey hooking an outswinging effort wide, and Alex flashed another chance inches shy of the bottom right corner as we worked hard to find the breakthrough. Holland Park Hawks were putting in a strong effort defensively.
Five minutes before the break, a brilliant passage of football ended with a cross meeting Luke Broderick in the centre of the box. A composed nod directed the ball into the bottom right corner, and we entered the break leading 1-0.

Hawks hicked off the second half, and continued to challenge us as we looked for a second goal. Liam Ponting curled a right-footed effort wide of the bottom right corner, and Luke Broderick forced a diving save from the edge of the box.
With fifteen minutes remaining, Kyle Weiser struck the equaliser for Holland Park, planting a well-timed header across the keeper and into the upper left corner.
Alex Fiechtner came close to re-instating our lead, but his deflected effort clipped the crossbar, and after a tense final ten minutes, the referee’s whistle blew to send us to Extra-Time for the second time in four days.
Five minutes into the restart, and Blair Ponting scored the type of goal you only really see on FIFA. A classic green-timed L2+O from the right tip of the box, outswinging into the top right corner with fury.

With three minutes remaining, Alex Fiechtner cut inside onto his left foot and curled the game-sealing goal into the top left corner with precision!

And to put the cherry on the icing on the cake in stoppage time, Frey Oyet met Alex Fiechtner’s chipped shot and the back post, poking it over the line.

Certainly an arduous affair. But immense persistence and effort from our Lions Men to endure and succeed in Extra Time for the fourth time this season. Well done to Dan Barber and the boys. We go again this weekend against the league leaders.
