LIONS VS SOUTHS UNITED: KWSC GRAND FINAL
Three second-half goals saw our Lionesses come from behind to secure their second title of the season.
Our Lions Women were focused from the get-go, creating several strong chances through Tia Appoo and Tara O’Keeffe across the opening quarter.
We went into the break level, maintaining control over the tempo while defending soundly against an enthusiastic Souths side attacking with intent.
Tegan Riding joined the fray after the hour mark. Despite strong chances in the first half, our Lions Women had been unable to create any meaningful opportunities after the restart. Immediately after Tegan Riding joined the match, Souths United snatched the lead in stunning fashion. A powerful right-footed rifle from twenty yards put the pressure on with less than thirty minutes remaining.
Meghan McElligott came up clutch. Running into space between the centre-backs, our #12 leapt acrobatically to meet an overhead ball, sending a volleyed chip arcing over the keeper before bouncing into the roof of the net.
Within ten minutes, Amy Gunston had flipped the script, poking the ball into the back of the net after having an initial shot deflected back into her path. This goal represented an incredible milestone, with Amy Gunston having scored in all three Kappa Women’s Super Cup Grand Finals.
With defensive reinforcements called on to see out the game, both Kaho Nakadate and Tegan Riding struck the crossbar before Amy Gunston put the final touches on a historic three-peat. On the edge of stoppage time, Amy Gunston picked up possession in the centre, weaving in and out before touching the ball to her left and hooking a left-footed strike into the top right corner.
Our Lionesses lifted a third consecutive Kappa Women’s Super Cup trophy and their second of the 2023 season.
