LIONS VS EASTERN SUBURBS: KAPPA WOMENS SUPER CUP
Two penalty saves and a stunning winning strike saw Elli Chapple lead our Lions to the Kappa Women’s Super Cup Semi-Final after a tense encounter away from home.
Both sides started fast at Heath Park, but Eastern Suburbs delivered the immediate pressure, forcing the ball over the line after several dangerous bounces following a corner.
We fought to respond before the break, with Tegan Riding and Rebecca Kirkup coming close from solid chances, but as we entered the break, we were behind.
With focus after the interval, Rebecca Kirkup revived our Lionesses before the hour mark, volleying a trickling ball into the bottom left corner after a fortunate bounce following a corner kick – Similar situation to Eastern Suburbs opener; same result.
Both sides tussled for an advantage across the final half hour, but the game was always destined for extra time.
Thirty minutes of extra time still failed to separate the two sides, with penalties the only way to split the two NPL heavyweights.
Composed spot-kicks from Kalli Cowles, Meghan McElligott and Ari Skeers on either side of two Elli Chapple penalty saves set our shot-stopper up for an iconic finish. With the game on the line, Elli stroked the ball into the bottom right corner to send our Lions to the Kappa Women’s Super Cup Semi-Finals.
