NPL Men R2: Lions Outclass Roar

LIONS MEN OUTCLASS YOUNG BRISBANE ROAR IN 3-0 TRIUMPH AT LUXURY PAINTS STADIUM

Our Lions Men started quickly against a young Brisbane Roar outfit, focused on a necessary victory after last week’s opening round defeat in Carrara.

The chances came early as our Lions Men started with speed. Hassan Ramazani scrambled a back-post volley into the path of a diving keeper, before Shaun Carlos rifled us ahead within ten minutes. Receiving the ball after a powerful diagonal run from Luke Broderick, Shaun took a swift touch before unleashing an effortless strike into the bottom left corner. The ball was in the back of the net before the keeper even knew what happened.

The young Brisbane Roar picked up their intensity, looking to press our Lions midfielders and recover possession high up the field. The press didn’t phase us, but they did make it difficult to create chances in the final third.

Alex Fiechtner slashed a firm half-volley into the palms of the keeper, and Luke Broderick sent a looping effort across goal after a promising move. We maintained control, but appeared rushed as we looked for our second goal.

James Enticknap whipped a high first-time cross towards the back post, but Alex Fiechtner nailed his header over the crossbar. After Ivan Ozzi pickpocketed possession in the final third, Tommy Jarrard made a quick interception to recover the ball and erase the threat.

With five minutes until the break, and a lone-goal lead that didn’t feel quite safe, Luke Broderick notched our second and sent us into the break with a greater hold over the game. Shaun Carlos played him into space after an audacious and awesome turn, and Luke rolled the ball neatly across the keeper and into the bottom left corner with composure!

We looked more composed in the second half. Roar didn’t make it easy to create chances, but they also didn’t create any serious threat in our defensive third. Hassan Ramazani made a crucial double block as the visitors countered quickly on the hour mark, and ten minutes later he made a firm clearance to prevent a hard cut-back from creating any pressure.

Andy Pengelly glanced a header over the crossbar after leaping bravely onto an early cross. Our defence remained resolute in the second half as we continued to look for a decisive chance to make it three. Both sides snatched at chances in the final ten minutes, but Andy Pengelly put the icing on the cake with a sharp first-time finish in stoppage time.

We saw out an important 3-0 victory for our first win of the 2025 NPL campaign!
