Alex Fiechtner’s brace saw our Lions Men close the gap to one point at the top of the table with a 2-0 victory over Moreton City Excelsior at Luxury Paints Stadium
Playing our third game in eight days, with the previous two being decided in extra time, our Lions Men faced another battle against the current league leaders. Four points separated us as we walked onto the field. A win would close it to one. A loss would be fatal.
A highly energetic and forceful start saw our Lions Men quickly establish themselves over last year’s Premiers. Watching the boys press and attacking in waves, you wouldn’t know we had 240 minutes of football behind us in just over a week.
Alex Fiechtner cut inside in the first five minutes, curling a stunning right-footed effort into the crossbar over the top right corner!
High pressure saw us catch Nathan Foster off his line, with Mitch Hore winning the ball in the centre of the pitch and guiding an aerial effort inches wide of the left side of the exposed goal frame.
Moreton City applied pressure in our defensive third, with Cher Deng making a key intervention in the centre of the box, and Jackson Hart-Phillips showing immense composure to make an unreal one-v-one challenge against Marquez Walters that stopped him from breaking down the centre.
Alex Fiechtner was somehow denied the breakthrough as Nathan Foster tipped his powerful diving header shy of the bottom left corner, but a deadly strike beat him at the near post minutes later to draw first blood!

Mitch Hore dribbled through about five players to break into the box, but saw his shot blocked by the last man, and Blair Ponting tried to match his Tuesday night screamer, but saw his curling strike miss the top left corner by millimetres. Harvey Pope saw a long-range effort smothered at the bottom left corner, and with a 1-0 lead to extend, our Lions Men entered the break in charge.
The second half proved just as intense, but our Lions Men remained the dominant force. Unmatched energy as we continued to dictate the flow of the game.
Mitch Hore was denied early after the restart, and Jacson Riley got to warm up his gloves with a crucial diving save at his near post. Harvey Pope’s slick sliding challenge from behind cancelled an Excelsior breakaway, and Tommy Jarrard kept the danger away with another strong challenge on the edge of the box.
Excelsior tried to apply pressure, but Alex Fiechtner silenced their attempts with a smart first-time finish to double our lead in the final quarter!

Fred Oyet joined in the closing minutes, cutting inside on his first touch of the game, and curling a glorious effort into the underside of the crossbar at the top right corner. We held our own and saw our statement 2-0 victory to close the gap to one point at the top.
If Moreton City Excelsior felt lonely at the top, they’ll certainly feel our presence now. Brilliant from the boys, especially those who competed in all three games across the last eight days. 330 minutes of action. Three wins. We’re just getting started.
