Alex Fiechtner’s second-half brace saw our Lions Men defeat Brisbane Roar Youth on a wet night in Nudgee Recreation Reserve
It was a physical, fast-paced, and entertaining start to life at Nudgee Recreation Reserve. Facing a young Brisbane Roar side, our Lions Men set out looking for an important win to keep pressure on Moreton City Excelsior at the top.
Our best chance came through Jackson Hart-Phillips, who scythed a brilliant back-post volley across the face of the goal and inches shy of the top right corner. With limited chances for either side, and possession traded back and forth in the Roar half, Blair Ponting sent warning signs with a powerful right-footed strike across the crossbar from a tight angle.
Before the half-hour mark, Mitch Hore found space after an excellent turn on the tip of the box, slotting a clinical effort into the bottom right corner!

Roar responded well after the goal, putting pressure on our defence and looking to snatch an equaliser before the break. Despite a few chances of our own, Roar succeeded, finding the back of the net from the right side of the box minutes before the referee sounded his whistle,
We entered the break locked at 1-1.
Roar started the second half with a strong intensity, putting early pressure on our defence. Jacson Riley made a critical one-v-one save with his leg to prevent them from taking the lead, and our defence remained composed through a brief spell of Roar dominance.
Alex Fiechtner forced a fingertip save with a brutal free kick from the edge of the box, and minutes after the hour mark, popped up with a lethal finish into the bottom right corner!

With our lead restored, so too was our control, and the brief spell of Roar momentum was shattered. We stayed on top, and with less than ten minutes remaining, Alex Fiechtner scored his second of the night to put the game to bed. A slick dribble and strike from Cher Deng was blocked, and Alex reacted quickest to pounce and fire into the bottom right corner!
