NPLM R15: Five Wins In A Row

Our Lions Men marked their return to Luxury Paints Stadium with their fifth NPL win in a row with a 2-1 victory over Rochedale Rovers

An intense match as we returned home to a lively crowd of Lions supporters. Cher Deng and Jacson Riley were called into action early as the visitors looked to stamp their authority, but we dealt with the threat and quickly asserted our control.

Alex Fiechtner cut inside and drilled a low effort towards the bottom right corner that was saved, and Jackson Hart-Phillips made a stunning block to prevent the visitors from striking upon an empty net.

Another strong spell from the Rovers saw Jacson Riley make a fingertip save before the visitors then struck the crossbar at close range.

Then, after the half-hour mark, Jerson Lagos marked his first start since returning from injury with a brilliant goal. His first NPL strike was a clinical chip after a fantastic team move from box to box!

Another strong move saw Jackson Hart-Phillips force the save with a powerful first-time strike! We entered the break with a 1-0 advantage.

After the break, we raised our level. Alex Fiechtner again came close to finding the back of the net, letting the ball run across his body before unleashing a dangerous strike that spun shy of the bottom right corner.

An unreal challenge from Tommy Jarrard inside the box recovered possession at full sprint as the visitors looked to create a one-on-one, and Blair Ponting’s screamer was saved at full stretch!

On the hour mark, Eremugo Debele was dragged down in the box, and Alex Fiechtner stepped up to convert from the spot!

With ten minutes remaining, Rochedale Rovers snatched a goal back, setting up a thrilling final ten minutes that saw our Lions Men maintain their composure to secure a crucial 2-1 victory!

NPL Men’s Head Coach Dan Barber shared his thoughts on the match and our overall performance.

“It’s excellent to be back at home. Obviously, we’ve had five games on the bounce now in the competition away from home, so pleasing to play in front of our fans again and on the great surface and facilities that we have here.

“The three points are important. I thought the performance was a little bit up and down. In times we were excellent and brave, and other times we took our foot off the gas a little bit and were a bit sloppy in position, so that was a bit of a frustration, but ultimately we’re delighted to win the game.”

Speaking about our incredible supporters, Dan was full of praise for the Lions Juniors, who created such a vibrant atmosphere.

“They were excellent. So noisy! I was trying to get a message over to Zane in the second half, and it took me four or five attempts.

It was really noisy on the bench, so we’re so grateful, and we’ve got some excellent fans there from our junior teams and our academy teams as well. So, you know, we’re really, really thankful to them and their families to come out and support the boys, and hopefully we can just keep repaying them with either good performances or good results or even both, which we’re doing okay in that regard.
