NPLM R7: Back To Winning Ways Against Wolves

Controversial. Compelling. One-sided. Alex Fiechtner’s hattrick spearheaded an emphatic five-nil victory over Wynnum Wolves at Carmichael Park!

In our third meeting against Wynnum Wolves this season, our Lions Men travelled to Carmichael Park for the first time. A clash between third and fourth, it was destined to be a blockbuster.

Nine minutes in, and the narrative was shifted. Liam Ponting’s long ball found the run of Alex Fiechtner, and as he sliced across his defender on the edge of the box, a hand blocked the ball, and a flash of red followed. Entirely unexpected. Completely out of nowhere. Wolves down to ten men after being perceived to deny a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity on the edge of the box. Both sides were baffled.

The night quickly went from bad to worse for the hosts, with Alex Fiechtner forcing an error, pressing the keeper intensely, and deflecting the ball into an empty net after blocking an attempted pass.

Despite being a player down, Wolves tried to respond positively, looking for a quick avenue back into the game. Cher Deng made a firm block to deny the danger, before moments later forcing an awkward save with a powerful bouncing effort from thirty yards!

A firm save at the near post denied Alex Fiechtner a brace at point-blank range, but on the stroke of half-time, he took his chance after the keeper rushed off his line and missed the ball completely, turning sharply and burying his tenth NPL goal of the season!

We entered the interval leading 2-0.

We restarted the game with complete control. One player up. Two goals up. An outcome entirely in our hands.

Alex again almost forced the ball into the net after pressing the keeper and blocking his pass, but this time the ball ricocheted upwards and was awkwardly palmed away as he looked to win the header. A slick trivella cross from Finn Beakhurst sought Alex at the back post, but his shot was smothered by the keeper.

On the hour mark, Alex Fiechtner put all hope to bed, darting into space on the left and slotting a classy first-time finish into the bottom left corner! Hattrick!

Soon after, Tresor Christophe, who had only recently come off the bench, found the back of the net himself. A special moment, as the talented youngster scored his first senior NPL goal for Lions with a great attacking run at the back post! Congrats, Tres!

Another talented youngster and U23s player, Coen Palm, was subbed onto the field to make his first senior NPL appearance. A fantastic achievement, and an exciting moment.

Mitch Hore forced an excellent diving save with a fierce strike from distance as we looked for goal number five, and with Wolves still seeking a consolation for their efforts, Zane North made a sensational sliding challenge to prevent a deadly counterattack down the centre!

To wrap up the game, Blair Ponting too scored his first NPL goal, beating his defender and skipping across the keeper casually before finishing with aplomb.

Without playing a second of stoppage time, the referee blew his whistle.
