OUR LIONS MEN FELL SHORT OF A STUNNING THREE-GOAL COMEBACK IN A PHYSICAL 4-3 DEFEAT AT HEATH PARK
A physical and combative midweek clash against Eastern Suburbs delivered all of the intensity expected between two heavyweight competitors. Our long-awaited clash, following a series of postponements, saw our Lions Men face the Tigers for the first time this season in a crucial Premiership battle.
Chances fell to both sides in a thrilling opening quarter, with Andy Pengelly planting a volley over the crossbar after an inventive move down the left flank. In our own half, Matt Acton in his first start made a stunning diving save to prevent a powerful effort from flying across his goal and into the left side-netting!
With the scores locked after the half-hour mark, Eastern Suburbs snatched an unconventional lead after an awkward deflection from a corner crept into the bottom left corner. We rose to the challenge, gathered our intensity for the final action of the half, and Jack Skinner once again provided the magic with a ruthless first-time strike from the edge of the box!

With almost the final action of the half, we entered the break locked 1-1.
Fast action after the restart saw our Lions Men awarded a penalty in the 50th minute after Trent Millard was scythed down inside the box. Andy Pengelly stood tall to take the kick, but his low effort was saved by the keeper, and the danger was cleared.
Playing in front of a vocal home crowd, Eastern Suburbs stepped up the intensity, and moments before the hour mark, snatched the lead after a surging run down the left flank and a punishing finish to follow.
Jack Skinner’s response was a sharp volley over the crossbar, and Eastern Suburbs quickly made it 3-1 after another quick breakaway. Matt Acton made an insane one-v-one block from point-blank range to prevent a fourth goal, but ten minutes later the hosts struck again, and our Lions Men looked buried.
Ten minutes remained to manufacture a miracle, and we put up a defiant last stand. Tommy Jarrard gave us a lifeline in the final five minutes, pouncing on an aerial ball at the back post and hammering a header over the line!

With belief, courage, and refusal to accept defeat, our Lions Men gathered what they could in a frantic and impassioned final attempt. Mitch Hore in the first minute of stoppage time lunged depserately into the box, forcing a swift header over the line to give us a sliver of hope.

And without time on our side, we threw everything in our power at the hosts, searching for a final goal to scrape a crucial point. Jack Skinner came close, and the chances were there, but Eastern Suburbs held on for a harsh 4-3 victory.
While we didn’t go there to lose, we can take pride in a passionate and fierce attempt to fight back from an almost impossible margin. Our focus turns to an even more important top-of-the-table clash against Moreton City Excelsior on the weekend, and our Lions Men are far from ready to back down.
