It was going to take a worldie to break United’s strong defence, and Alex Fiechtner answered the call with a stunning stoppage-time strike to secure a 1-0 victory!
With Moreton City Excelsior’s emphatic result over Peninsula Power, the onus was on our Lions Men to answer with a win to keep our 1-point gap from the top of the league.
Chances weren’t easy to create in the opening stages as Gold Coast United’s game plan was made clear. Eremugo Debele snatched a shot from the byline early on, and Alex Fiechtner guided a half-volley over the crossbar from the edge of the box.
Possession was almost entirely orange. Very little from the visitors, but they certainly made it difficult to create meaningful chances. Closing in on half-time, Alex Fiechtner snatched a chance out of nowhere, bursting onto a pass at the near post, spinning on the spot and firing a sharp effort towards the inside-right post. His effort was blocked.
Another effort from distance, by Alex, was saved by the keeper, and we entered the break with a goalless scoreline to break.
The half-time team talk must have worked, because ten minutes into the second half, we had created more chances than the entire first forty-five minutes alone.
Eremugo Debele forced an early save, and Cher Deng forced the keeper to claw a lunging outside boot effort away from the bottom left corner at close range. Alex forced a low diving save to deny the opener, and a brilliant team move saw Eremugo denied at the back post!
The visitors crept out of their low block a few times as the game advanced. Tommy Jarrard made a crucial flick-on header to deny an open chance at the back post, and Mitch Hore made an excellent challenge from behind, tracking back and winning possession without contact in the box.
Mitch cut across his defender and forced a tidy save from the edge of the box, and Jacson Riley was forced to make a stunning left-hand save to prevent the opener finding the bottom right corner after our defence was beaten by the opposition.
It was an emphatic sliding challenge from Sander Griggs that frustrated the visitors on another rare attacking move, and our Lions Men continued to knock on the deadbolted door that was Gold Coast United’s goal.
Alex Fiechtner saw two more chances saved in the dying moments, but like all great goalscorers, he kept firing.
Nil, nil. Ninety-fourth minute. Alex Fiechtners turns on the edge of the box and fires a glorious screamer into the top right corner. Fingertips from the keeper couldn’t deny him. The leading goalscorer keeps leading the way!
