NPLM Round #10: A Precise Statement

LIONS MEN MAKE STATEMENT WITH BRUTAL VICTORY OVER WYNNUM WOLVES TO MOVE INTO SECOND PLACE

Five second-half goals encapsulated a clinical and precise performance on the road as our Lions Men overtook Wynnum Wolves to move up the NPL Queensland table.

We started with clarity, controlling the ball in the opposition third while creating chances in the early stages. A back-post header and a follow-up effort skimmed narrowly wide before Jackson Hart-Phillips won a corner with a late deflected shot from the edge of the box.

Shaun Carlos drew first blood in beautiful fashion, setting the ball on the edge of the box before unleashing a vicious strike into the top right corner. We continued to create chances in the first half before Jack Skinner doubled our lead on the brink of half-time. A sharp strike across the goal and under the keeper sent us into the interval with a 2-0 advantage.

With second place on the line, we restarted the second half with a strong intent, continuing to dominate as we had in the first half. Andy Pengelly forced an outstanding save after running off the shoulder and firing a powerful effort towards the top left corner.

Two minutes before the hour mark, Shaun Carlos rushed onto a loose ball and hooked a first-time effort into the bottom right corner with precision. One minute before the hour mark, Jack Skinner sprinted into the box with speed, creating space with a quick stepover before unleashing a venomous strike into the top left corner.

A handball within the box saw our Lions Men awarded a penalty three minutes after the hour mark. Andy Pengelly made no mistake with our fifth, sending the keeper the wrong way and planting the ball inside the left post.

Shaun Carlos came close to securing his hattrick before Alex Fiechtner came off the bench to make it six with a scything first-time strike across the goal and under the keeper. Brilliant speed.

The final nail in the coffin came through Joe Duckworth, who made a discreet, uncharted run into the box before deftly nodding home at the front post. We walked off the field with a 7-0 victory, advancing into second place and handing The Wolves just their second defeat of the season.

Next week, we host Gold Coast Knights as we look to close the gap at the top of the table.
