NPLW R16: Anna Soulsby Snatches A Point

Late goals from Abbey Lloyd and Anna Soulsby saw our Lions Women fight from two goals down to rescue a point against Capalaba on the road

Kicking off at 8:30pm on a cold, misty Tuesday night in Capalaba, our Lions Women brushed off the chill quickly and started carving passes through the dew-covered grass.

Natalie Tathem saw an early chance denied at the bottom right corner after a strong team move built through the fog, and Anna Soulsby saw a firm effort saved after a sly run in behind the Bulldogs’ defence.

A stunning whipped cross from Teagan Hugo arced to the back post onto the foot of Anna’s run, but her strike was blocked by the boot of the goalkeeper. Next, it was Scarlett Premerl who delivered a glorious cross. Anna Soulsby’s powerful header was caught.

Despite the fog, our Lions Women had no trouble finding each other on the pitch. An awesome collective move saw Scarlett flick a near-post header into the centre of the box. A few deft touches in the air from Anna before playing the ball to Abbey Lloyd, and her sharp first-time effort hit the bottom left post.

It was a promising start, which on the stroke of half-time, was punctured by a Capalaba goal. We were behind 1-0 at the break.

Minutes after the restart, Capalaba doubled their advantage.

Anna blazed a fierce volley over the crossbar as we looked for a response, and after the hour mark, we thought we had a goal back when the ball clipped the underside of the crossbar following a corner, but was cleared before it could cross the line.

Shianna Singh dragged a shot wide, and as it started to feel like our attempts were futile, Abbey Lloyd pulled back a goal, rounding the keeper with composure before blasting the ball into the back of an empty net.

Game on.

Scarlett played a beautiful early longball, which Abbey controlled on her chest perfectly, before dispatching a powerful volley that was somehow tipped wide of the bottom right corner! Abbey Lloyd again beat the keeper at a tight angle, but her shot was blocked inside the box.

Entering stoppage time with one last chance to salvage a point, Anna Soulsby stepped up with a stunning long-range strike that kissed the underside of the crossbar as it hit the back of the net!

A point shared, and a fantastic response from our Lions Women to steal a point at the death.
