OUR LIONS WOMEN FOUGHT BACK TO EARN A NECESSARY POINT IN A NAIL-BITING 1-1 DRAW AGAINST A GOLD COAST KNIGHTS
Under freezing cold temperatures at the Croatian Sports Centre, our Lions Women battled hard against an in-form Gold Coast Knights side, fighting to overtake Eastern Suburbs at the top of the NPL table.
A balanced first half saw limited chances for either side, with our Lions Women focusing our attacks down the wider channels while dealing with the Gold Coast Knights’ attack efficiently. We were composed across the park and commanding in possession, working patiently to build out from the back while mitigating any chances from the hosts.
Elli Chapple made a fantastic diving save on the stroke of half-time in what was the Knights’ only clear chance of the half. The game remained goalless at the break.
Rhythm and intensity increased after the interval, and it was Knight’s who struck first against the run of play. Bronte Rose burst down the shoulder, winning her duel with Ellen Gett before rifling a fierce strike over Elli and into the roof of the net.
Minutes later, the hosts threatened to overwhelm us, with Elli Chapple forced to make a brilliant reactive save at her near post. The ball bounced dangerously on the line, but Libby Cybulski made an authoritative clearance to erase the danger.
Our heads remained clear and our game plan solid, and ten minutes later, after a strong response to going behind, Meaghan McElligott arrived at the back post to slice home our equaliser. A fine collective move that started from our goal kick, involved seven players, and was created with a fantastic cross from Amy Gunston!

An intense final half-hour followed, with both sides fighting hard for the go-ahead goal. Our Lions Women remained determined, dangerous, and cohesive as we put pressure on the Gold Coast Knights’ defence, but the winning goal wouldn’t fall for us, and we were forced to accept a stalemate in Carrara.
Our U23s Women played earlier in the afternoon, also being held to a 1-1 draw despite dominating large spells of the game. Molly Simonson’s stunning solo effort gave our U23s Women the lead, but a setpiece on the stroke of half-time saw us pinned to a draw.
