NPLW R27: Lions Cook Souths United In Dominant Second Half

FOUR UNANSWERED GOALS AFTER THE BREAK SAW OUR LIONS WOMEN END THEIR FINAL GAME AT HOME WITH A RAMPANT 5-1 VICTORY

With nowhere to move from fourth, our Lions Women were playing for pride and sharpness in their final home game of the 2025 season. A semi-final against the Gold Coast Knights is marked for two weeks away.

A strong and expansive start saw our Lions Women dominate possession and create plenty of pressure in the wider areas of the pitch. Chelsea Blissett flashed a low cross into the centre of the box that sent early warning signs. The danger was cleared before we could finish.

Minutes later, as we continued to advance, Scarlett Premerl won possession inside the box and fired a tight-angled strike into the palms of the keeper! Abby Evetts tested the keeper with a downward header, and Ellen Gett made a quick-thinking block down the other end to prevent a dangerous shot on the counter.

We broke the deadlock at last through Chelsea, who delivered a powerful first-time strike from the edge of the box that deflected off the first man and landed in the bottom left corner!

With control in our favour and a goal to our names, Souths United woke up and started to apply pressure in our defensive third. They forced mistakes, created chances, and three minutes before the interval, they found their equaliser. A lapse in focus playing out from the back, a clinical finish, and we entered the break locked at 1-1.

It was a difficult start to the second half, with Souths United continuing to apply effective pressure on our defence. Scarlett almost snatched a go-ahead goal, pickpocketing possession on the edge of the box and firing a blank over the crossbar with power.

Amy Gunston and Libby Cybulski were subbed in to rejuvenate both ends of the team, and Amy made an immediate impact with a breakthrough strike on the hour mark. A fierce strike through the keeper after an excellent cross from Chelsea!

Scarlett almost doubled our advantage with an outrageous strike from thirty yards, but her effort missed the target. It didn’t matter because she made her mark minutes later with a classy finish down the centre after a whipped cross met her in the middle. She celebrated her twelfth NPL goal of the season by crashing into the post!

We entered the final ten minutes with our work far from finished as Souths United looked to pull back a goal in their favour. Rachel Dudley skipped inside and fired a powerful effort towards the bottom left corner!

Amy Gunston put the game to bed with a fantastic finish strike to finish a sleek team move! Within one minute, she wrapped up her hattrick with a close-range finish to make it 5-1!

We maintained our focus in the final five minutes, securing a proud and composed victory in our final home game of the season!

Our U23s Lions Women faced second-place Souths United in a crucial clash as we look to secure a place in the top four and the Finals Series. We battled valiantly across 90 minutes under the hot sun and left with a tense 0-0 draw. Evie Schultz thought she had found the back of the net late in the first half, but the goal was ruled out for an alleged foul on the keeper! The result keeps us in third place with one game remaining, and gives us a strong chance of making the semi-finals. We can also celebrate going five games unbeaten as we surge towards the final stages of a demanding 2025 campaign!
