NPLW R9: Seven in the Second Half

OUR LIONS WOMEN STUNNED MITCHELTON WITH SEVEN GOALS IN A SCINTILLATING SECOND HALF VICTORY AT TERALBA PARK

Playing away on synthetic fields at Teralba Park, it was a slow start to proceedings against Mitchelton.

With the hosts defending firmly, it was Elli Chapple who was forced to make the first save of the game, reacting quickly to block a late shot at her front post. Shianna Singh quickly responded with a chance for our Lions Women, and forced a fine save with her curling effort!

Tonia-Marie Rantucci saw a first-time effort blocked at the near post as we looked to break the deadlock before the break. We ended the half locked at 0-0.

If the first half was quiet, the second half was the opposite.

Five minutes in, and Rachel Dudley picked the bottom right corner with precision to break the deadlock.

Within five minutes of the opener, Shianna Singh arrived at the front post to steer a Shianne Rosselli cross into the roof of the net.

On the hour mark, Mitchelton recovered a crucial goal to make it 2-1, beating Elli Chapple at the bottom right corner with precision.

We quickly looked to reassemble our two-goal lead, with Tonia-Marie Rantucci directing a header wide at the back post and Shianne Rosselli curling a strong chance over the crossbar.

It didn’t take long. Shianna Singh scored the best goal of the game with a stunning strike from the edge of the box, and our Lions Women took a 3-1 lead!

We managed the game effectively after re-establishing our two-goal margin. Defensively, we didn’t put a foot wrong, and we still managed to create chances in the final third.

Shianna Rosselli was denied at point-blank range as we looked to kill the game completely. Then, we scored four goals in the final ten minutes to completely obliterate the hosts.

Tonia-Marie Rantucci scored in the 82nd minute to put the game to bed, and Meaghan McElligott came off the bench to score a hattrick inside five minutes!

Her first goal was an elegant flick after rounding the goalkeeper smoothly. Two minutes later, she arrived at the front post to tuck a first-time chance into the bottom right corner. Three minutes after that, she beat her defender and slotted the ball past the keeper with experience and composure!

After our ten-minute onslaught ended, we saw out stoppage time and walked off the synthetic turf with an emphatic 7-1 victory. Incredible second half from Rob Askew and the girls!
