A hattrick of assists from Evelyn Calhoon helped our Lions Women to a thorough and dominant 4-0 victory on the road against Souths Brisbane Strikers United!
The latest late-night show for our Lions Women. And on a Tuesday night, no less. The game started late to make the late night even later, but if it was past anybody’s bedtime, you wouldn’t know it.
Amy Gunston fired us straight into the lead inside ten minutes. Rising in the centre of the box to send a powerful downward header crashing off the wet grass and looping over the keeper into the roof of the net!

Minutes later, Amy surged down the right channel after a great run off the shoulder, but flashed a low effort across the face of goal. And a few minutes later, Evelyn Calhoon’s brilliant freekick delivery doubled our advantage. It was Anna Soulsby who got the final touch as her effort struck the post!
Wanting a goal of her own, Evelyn blasted a firm first-time effort wide of the right post after a flurry of almost-chances fell to her on the edge of the box. Before the thirtieth minute, we made it three. Abbey Lloyd rose at the back post, tipping another Evelyn set-piece delivery into the back of the net.

That’s three assists for Evelyn. All from set-pieces. Outstanding!
Abbey Lloyd scuffed a shot wide after winning possession on the edge of the box. The rain that had started with the first kick subsided. And Evelyn delivered another fine set-piece, this time into the crossbar.
We entered the break leading 3-0.
The second half began, and soon the gentle rainfall would return.
Elli Chapple made a great diving save to prevent a quick start from the hosts, and our Lions Women maintained a firm grip on the game as time elapsed.
Amy Gunston made a scintillating run through the right shoulder, rounding the keeper delicately before whipping a reverse cross into the near post. Such was the power of her almost-out-of-play effort that it struck the first defender and ricocheted dramatically off the crossbar!
Scarlett Premerl launched a very high cross towards the back post, but Abbey guided her header wide. Emileigh Bowman forced a firm fist save to punch a powerful sinking freekick over the top-hand corner!
Amy Gunston put the icing on the top of a tidy team performance, rolling a calm ball into the bottom left corner after a great run and cross from Ana Tormena!

Several chances followed as we looked for a fifth goal to wrap up a golden performance. Dominant from start to finish with very little stress, and a commanding demonstration on the road. Rest is well deserved. Well done to Nic Whiteside and our Lions Women.
Easter weekend off, and then we’re back to business!
