LIONS VS GOLD COAST UNITED: NPL WOMEN
A crucial point on the road leaves us within one point of securing the Premiership for a third consecutive season!
On a cold, bleak night in Tallebudgera, our Lions were restricted from dominating by an in-form Gold Coast United outfit.
Playing away from home against United for the second time this season, our Lionesses defended effectively in numbers, closing the hosts down, while experiencing the same resistance when our forwards attempted to create danger in the final third.
Tegan Riding tried her luck from forty yards after having several early attempts defended. In a tense midfield battle with high turnovers of possession, neither side was able to create many strong chances in transition.
Fortune almost broke the deadlock as a corner bounced awkwardly towards the United goal, but it was cleared off the line desperately at the last moment. Elli Chapple remained focused, rushing off her line to smother a particularly dangerous attack before the break.
Perhaps our best chance came just before the hour mark, with Zara Kruger recovering possession in the final third before pivoting on the spot and firing a long-range effort narrowly wide. Teagan Thompson came on at the break to change things. Tara O’Keeffe and Tia Appoo joined her twenty minutes later, adding more cutting-edge as the game drew closer to concluding.
A late Zara Kruger volley was blocked at the back post in our final strong chance in a game destined to end level.
With three games remaining this season, a draw next week against Olympic would be enough to earn us the silverware.
