Weekend Recap #28: The Final Weekend of Regular Football

NPLM R22, NPLW R27

Our Lions Men were held to a draw while our Lionesses wrapped up their final game of the season with a victory.

LIONS VS MORETON BAY: NPL MEN

A hard-fought draw against Moreton Bay saw our Lions fall out of the top four on the final day of the season.

An engaging start to a must-win game saw plenty of chances fall both ways. Luke Borean was caught off his line early, with the chance sailing wide. We failed to capitalise on a series of chances in the Moreton Bay box before a crucial defensive intervention allowed us to prevent an attack from the guests.

Luke Borean was called upon to make several crucial saves before the first half ended goalless.

We started on the front foot in the second half, but Moreton Bay opened the scoring by the hour mark through Marquez Walters. Five minutes later, Fletcher McDonald was brought down in the box, with Andy Pengelly stroking home from the penalty spot to level the scoreline.

Dispute a series of substitutes and a few late chances, we fell out of the top four after failing to find a breakthrough.

We will take on Brisbane City at Imperial Corp Stadium in a Brisbane Classico Semi-Final.

Goalscorers:

LIONS VS SOUTHS UNITED: NPL WOMEN

A hattrick for Tegan Riding on her 200th NPL appearance saw our Lionesses secure victory on the final day of the season.

Our Lions dominated the opening stages at home, dictating the temp and controlling possession. It took just twenty minutes for Tegan Riding to mark her special occasion with a goal, running in behind before flicking the ball into the back of the net with composure.

We continued to advance in numbers, forcing a few fine saves before settling for a one-goal lead at the break.

Tiarna Karambasis sent a long-range strike clattering off the upper left stick before an unfortunate deflection at the near post levelled the scores with twenty minutes remaining.

Tegan Riding immediately found the breakthrough, restoring our lead before adding a hattrick goal late in the half to secure all three points.

Our attention turns to the Kappa Women’s Super Cup Grand Final against Souths United.

Goalscorers:

19’, 75’, 87’ | Tegan Riding

HT: LIO 1-0 SOU

FT: LIO 3-1 SOU
