A thrilling and effective performance saw our Lions Men strike three against the Wolves on a humid, rainy night in Richlands.
Moved forward three days in anticipation of this weekend’s predicted weather, the lightning & rain that threatened our midweek kickoff stayed on the fringes so that we could play. Lions hosting Wolves again.
If it feels like we were just here, it’s because we were. Two weeks ago, it was Zane North’s late strike that sent us to the top of Group F, and fate (or math) pitted us against each other once again.
Our Lions Men took the first kick, and it was clear early on that the stakes had been raised since our last encounter. It was fast-paced, electrifying, physical, and brave football as both sides traded possession and looked for the opening goal.
A swift, diagonal attacking move saw Jackson Hart-Phillips receive the ball on the left flank, playing a lateral pass to Jerson Lagos on the edge of the box. It was a blunt first-time strike, and the keeper scooped it up in the centre.
We spent much of our time in the Wolves’ half, and came close to finding the opener through a whipped Shaun Carlos cross. Alex Fiechtner lunged into the danger at the back post, but his header was skewed over the crossbar. Eremugo Debele drilled a cross-turned-shot across the keeper from wide on the right, and Cher Deng made an excellent defensive recovery to prevent a dangerous ball from being played.
Wolves several times looked to threaten us in the final ten minutes of the first half. Fernando Nash was played into space behind, but Tommy Jarrard chased him down and won the ball before any danger could materialise. A slick sliding challenge from Eremugo Debele also ensured Wolves couldn’t put a cross into the box after an attacking move down the left.
Into the first half stoppage, Cher Deng progressed to the edge of the box, and while everyone watching was thinking ‘HIT IT’, he laid the ball into the path of Jerson Lagos, who rifled a stinging right-footed effort into the bottom left corner!

And with Jerson Lagos striking late, we entered the break leading 1-0.
It was a quick start from Wolves when play resumed after the break. After Eremugo’s back pass found Fernando Nash, and Jacson Riley raced off his line to no avail, Wolves looked certain to score in what was literally an open goal. But Eremugo reacted quickly and, with a crucial sliding tackle, eradicated the danger.
Shaun Carlos threaded a sleek defence-splitting ball down the left file to meet Mitch Hore’s run, but his across-body strike was blocked by the first man. An effort from Jerson Lagos was fired over the crossbar, and with twenty minutes remaining, Alex Fiechtner was hacked down at the ankle and awarded a penalty.
He calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner!

The second goal certainly blunted the intensity of the game, as our Lions Men had clear command over proceedings. And less than ten minutes after the first, Sander Griggs was sliced down and awarded a penalty.
Jerson Lagos stepped up to the spot this time, and with a run-up that begged for a Panenka, he placed a smart effort into the bottom right to secure our progression.

We saw out the final ten minutes with little stress, and will advance to the Semi-Finals of the Kappa Pro Series.
