LIONS MEN ROAR INTO GEAR WITH A 4-1 VICTORY IN THE KAPPA PRO SERIES
Two goals on either side of the interval saw our Lions Men storm through Eastern Suburbs in our first home game of 2024.
We got off to an electric start at Luxury Paints Stadium, with Jack Skinner causing early danger and forcing a tame save after taking on two defenders.
Luke Broderick opened the scoring before the tenth minute, slotting home at the near post between the keeper’s legs after a sharp move down the right flank. Alex Fiechtner clipped the crossbar 15 minutes later as our Lions continued to create constant chances in the final third.
After dictating the tempo across the opening half-hour, Jack Skinner doubled our lead with a lethal first-time strike into the bottom left corner after a sharp cutback from the right wing. We went into the break level feeling comfortable after a dominant opening half.
Fletcher McDonald put the game to bed early in the second half, planting a powerful first-time strike into the top right corner after intricate play on the left side of the box saw the ball fall kindly in his favour. Luke Broderick guided a header narrowly wide after a majestic leap at the back post, and Alex Fiechtner saw an almost certain goal cleared with a remarkable block in the box.
A goal for Eastern Suburbs on the hour mark sobered us up as the momentum briefly shifted and the visitors picked up their tempo. We held on, made the appropriate tactical adjustments, and re-captured our three-goal cushion as Andy Pengelly added his name to the scoresheet with an emphatic strike late in the game.
A strong all-round performance saw our Lions leave the field with strength as we continue our explosive start to the 2024 campaign.
