ANDY PENGELLY’S LATE BRACE SAW OUR LIONS MEN FIGHT FROM BEHIND AT MEAKIN PARK TO TRIUMPH 3-2 IN A HEATED SEMI-FINAL CLASH
It was a thunderous start at Meakin Park, quite literally, as bleak grey skies turned to rain. Alex Fiechtner rifled a powerful left-footed effort into the crossbar in the opening minute to set the tone, and our Lions Men seized early control.
After several strong chances, Luke Broderick found the deadlock at last, embarking on a daring run down the right flank before phasing inside cleanly and ripping a close-range effort into the roof of the net from the byline!

While our Lions Men looked to build on their opening goal, the hosts had other ideas. Lightning struck twice in the form of two headers, and the game flipped from 0-1 to 2-1 in the span of two minutes.
A firm header following a corner drew Roar level, and a glancing clipped header from the centre of the box stole the lead.
And so, we entered the interval trailing 2-1, with forty-five minutes to flip the script and secure our place in the Kappa Pro Series Final!
With forty-five minutes to prevent a Semi-Final exit, our Lions Men had a challenge on their hands. Andy Pengelly stretched to reach an overhit cross in the box, but his toe poked the effort marginally wide as we fought for an equaliser.
After twenty-five minutes of hard work in a physically demanding and frantic game, Andy Pengelly broke even with a composed and experienced finish into the top right corner after Jackson Hart-Phillips’ cross skipped across the box!

We now sought the goal that we knew would come, as we looked to avoid extra time and finish the job within ninety minutes. Another blistering run from Luke Broderick saw him dart inside the box before firing a low effort into the path of the keeper.
Mitch Hore forced a fine reactive save from the Roar keeper, directing a powerful close-range header towards the centre of the goal with precision.
Ten minutes after his equaliser, and with extra time looming under the dreary skies at Meakin Park, Andy Pengelly struck the winner! A measured first-time finish under the keeper from close range, and our Lions Men were back in front!

We dealt with late danger from a young Brisbane Roar side, and saw out a deserved 3-2 victory to send us to our second consecutive Kappa Pro Series Final. Last year’s 3-2 victory over Gold Coast United was our first title, and we now have a chance to go back-to-back against Moreton City Excelsior!
