OUR LIONS MEN SECURED THEIR PLACE IN THE AUSTRALIA CUP ROUND OF 32 WITH A 2-0 VICTORY OVER SURFERS PARADISE APOLLO
Goals from Luke Broderick and Alex Fiechtner on either side of the interval secured progression in a tense match at Luxury Paints Stadium.
With qualification to the National Round of the Australia Cup on the line, our Lions Men started the game with intent.
An early half-volleyed effort from James Enticknap was saved at point-blank range before Andy Pengelly saw a powerful header saved at the bottom right corner. Resistance from the visitors and several fine saves kept us at bay until the thirtieth minute.
Luke Broderick created the opening goal, carrying the ball inside before dispatching a pass and bursting into space behind the centreback. He received the ball from Andy Pengelly, taking a deft touch before placing his shot into the bottom right corner.
We carried a slender lead into the interval.
Chances were hard to come by in the second half, with Surfers Paradise Apollo defending in numbers while trying to catch us unbalanced in the back. Jack Skinner cut sharply into the box before slicing a left-footed effort across the face of goal.
It was Alex Fiechtner who finally doubled our lead, providing relief with a ruthless strike into the roof of the net from close range. We maintained possession in the final stages, grinding out a difficult victory against an opponent who wouldn’t give up.
This win see our Lions Men to the Australia Cup Round of 32, and to the Semi-Finals of the Kappa Queensland Cup!
