Rahmat Akbari’s first Lions FC goal sends our Lions Men to the Quarter-Finals in a dominant 1-0 victory at Goodwin Park
It was a promising start under yet another rainy night at Goodwin Park. An early first-time strike from Shaun Carlos set the tone early, and our Lions Men began creating space, attacking the box, and looking for the breakthrough.
Alex Fiechtner cut inside from the edge of the box, forcing a straightforward save, and Mitch Hore missed a great opportunity at the near post. Shaun Carlos again tested the keeper from distance without luck.
A fantastic piece of build-up play saw us advance from box to box, with Jackson Hart-Phillips sending a venomous half-volley over the crossbar after an initial shot was saved in the centre. Eremugo Debele flashed an effort towards the goalkeeper from the byline, and Alex struck the woodwork after a surging run down the left.
Complete dominance without hitting the net, and we entered the break with a goalless scoreline to break.
We increased our level after the break, putting dangerous crosses into the box and overwhelming the Olympic defence.
The goal came at last as Alex Fiechtner’s corner was flicked centrally by Shaun Carlos, with Rahmat Akbari reacting first to direct the ball into the back of the net. His first competitive goal for the club!

Another Messi-esque run from Cher Deng, this time skipping around four defenders like training cones before delivering a sharp cutback that skirted across the face of goal unmet.
Alex Fiechtner almost doubled our lead, cutting inside and drilling a low effort inches shy of the bottom right corner. With Olympic throwing bodies forward in the final minutes, Cardiff Pond made a brilliant reactive save at his near post to deny the equaliser.
A professional performance ended 1-0 in our favour, and Rahmat’s first goal sent us through to the Quarter Finals of the Kappa Queensland Cup.
We will face Sunshine Coast Wanderers on Saturday, 13th June on the road for a place in the Semi-Finals!
