KQC Women Round #5: Victory Over Virginia

OUR LIONS WOMEN PROGRESS IN THE KAPPA QUEENSLAND CUP WITH A COMPOSED WIN OVER FQPL SIDE VIRGINIA UNITED

A Meaghan McElligott hattrick headlined a strong team performance as we defeated a spirited Virginia United side at Luxury Paints Stadium.

We started on the front foot, with Meaghan McElligott breaking the deadlock within ten minutes. A powerful and composed volley swept under the keeper from close range.

Minutes later, Samantha DeBien doubled our advantage with an elegant flicked header that sunk under the crossbar and into the top right corner. Chloe Dale then made it three, underlining a strong attacking performance from our fullback as she continued to make runs into channels while shooting whenever the opportunity arose.

Meaghan McElligott burst into the box, meeting a lofted cross and clipping a first-time chip into the left side of the goal. Alyssa Cox forced an outstanding diving save before Meaghan McElligott spun her defender in the box and drilled a low shot under the keeper for her hattrick.

We entered the interval with a 5-0 advantage.

Amy Gunston made an instant impact off the bench, making it six within minutes of the restart. She burst into the box before opening her body and placing a well-weighted shot into the right side of the goal.

Alyssa Cox added to the score with a powerful header from the corner before Tiarna Karambasis scored the goal of the game to make it eight. From the edge of the box, TK curled a first-time out-swinging shot into the top right corner with flair.

Chloe Dale was brought down in the box, earning a penalty that Amy Gunston converted for her second goal of the night. With minutes to go, Amy Gunston secured her hattrick with a close-range finish.

Our Lions Women saw out a 10-0 victory on the road, but that result doesn’t take away from the strong effort shown by Virginia United, who are performing strongly in the FQPL1 this season.

The visitors showed a lot of character, creating several chances and continuing to attack in transition, while the keeper was crucial in making several 1v1 saves.

A great result for our Lions Women, who progress to the next round in the Kappa Queensland Cup.
