Australia Cup Preliminary Round #6
LIONS MEN FEND OFF THE JETS ON THE ROAD, AND OUR LIONS WOMEN SEE OFF THE BULLDOGS AT HOME
A fast-paced and rampant display saw our Lions Men brush North Star aside at Luxury Paints Stadium.
LIONS VS NORTH STAR: AUSTRALIA CUP
A resilient display saw our Lions men strike back after an early blow, with an Andy Pengelly double recovering a necessary three points.
With intent from kick-off in a heavily rotated men’s side, Andy Pengelly rose first to nod home within two minutes of play. He would drag another effort wide minutes later before Cody Oestreich was put to the test, parrying an audacious overhead scissor kick out of play for a corner.
Joe Duckworth fired home our second, playing the ball into Ryo Ono before running onto his first-time layoff and piercing the bottom right corner with a sting. Pengelly followed up by nodding home his second of the night, lunging towards a Jackson Hart-Phillips cross in the centre of the box.
Right before the break, Dominic Horwood rose at the back post, heading downwards and breaching the keepers’ outstretched arm as it spilt into the bottom right corner. We exited the half comfortably ahead and kicked off the second half with the same intent.
Novak Kljajic joined from the bench, opening the scoring in the second half after darting between the centrebacks and tapping into an open goal after forcing an initial save.
Ivan Ozzi slashed home our sixth goal of the night with a ferocious strike under the keeper’s arm before Cooper Nichols capped off an excellent midfield performance with a low-driven strike from the edge of the box.
Novak Kljajic rose like a familiar Portuguese forward at the back post, thumping home a powerful header at the back post.
This resounding result sees us progress to the next round of the Australia Cup.
