ANDY PENGELLY’S BRACE SEES OUR LIONS MEN DEFEAT BRISBANE ROAR 2-1 AT MEAKIN PARK
Brisbane Roar Youth kicked us off under cold Sunday afternoon sunlight at Meakin Park. The hosts tried to put us under pressure quickly from the first kick, but our Lions Men dealt with danger and started working the ball up the field with intent.
Our first strong chance came in a flash through Mitch Hore. A swift, low cross delivered from the right flank met Mitch’s run towards the centre of the box, and his inventive backheeled flick-shot was saved by the keeper.
We continued to dominate the tempo, particularly down the wide channels, and our next best chance once again materialised from a low cross. Luke Broderick hooked the ball towards Andy Pengelly, and his first-time effort was denied at point-blank range.
The first half seemed destined to end level as Young Roar mounted a disciplined defensive performance. That is, until the 40th minute, when Luke Broderick was scythed down by the keeper after a penetrating run towards the back post.
Andy Pengelly stood over the ball, and his spot-kick broke the deadlock!

We entered the break with a 1-0 lead to enhance after the break.
The physicality increased after the interval, but control never wavered as our Lions Men sought a crucial second goal. It took a brilliant set-piece delivery from Joe Duckworth to create our second goal on the hour mark. A masterful cross from deep met Tommy Jarrard at the far post, and his header arced over the keeper before a final touch from Andy Pengelly poked it over the line.

Luke Borean made an excellent save at his near post as Roar looked for a quick response. Moments later, Hassan Ramazani was delivered a perfectly timed slide tackle to prevent a dangerous strike, and Luke Borean again came in clutch, tipping a well-connected strike over the crossbar!
Alex Fiechtner looked to make an impact from the bench, darting inside and curling an effort towards the bottom left corner. The shot was saved.
With no time on the clock, Brisbane Roar recovered a goal with the final kick of the game, sneaking the ball past Luke Borean after a low free-kick delivery.
We got the job done with an important 2-1 victory on the road, and we turn our attention to another away day against Wynnum Wolves next week!
