OUR LIONS MEN WERE HELD TO A THRILLING 0-0 DRAW IN A PASSIONATE TOP-OF-THE-TABLE CLASH AT LUXURY PAINTS STADIUM
It’s not often that you can call a goalless draw entertaining, but our top-of-the-table clash delivered all of the fire, energy, and combativeness one would expect from two heavyweight title challengers, just without the goals.
Joe Duckworth created our first clear chance of the game, flashing a powerful first-time effort inches over the top left corner after a well-timed run to the edge of the box. Physical and intense, our Lions Men controlled possession in a patient opening to the game, and Oskar Dillon made an authoritative block as Moreton City attempted their first shot of the game.
The scores somehow remained level in the twentieth minute, with a treble of certain chances all failing to cross the line for our Lions Men. First, Jack Skinner burst through a late tackle from behind, managing to stay on his feet before forcing a diving save with his low effort across the keeper. With the ball still in their third, Joe Duckworth twisted away from two defenders on the edge of the box before arrowing a sharp left-footed effort into the bottom right post – the ball skated across the entire goal-line without crossing, and then Shaun Carlos saw a brilliant curling effort headed off the line at the top right corner!
Our final chance of the first half saw Joe Duckworth guide a piercing first-time volley over the crossbar from the edge of the box, and we entered the break goalless despite dominating the game.
The second half saw fewer chances, but far more challenges as both teams clung desperately to their cleansheets while trying to snatch a potentially season-defining goal down the other end. Jack Skinner, who had their Moreton City defence on their toes for the entire game, sliced inside and forced a front-post block with a ferocious strike across the keeper.
Tommy Jarrard made an immense block as Moreton City searched for a cutback to the centre after a great attacking move, and Matt Acton made a series of crucial saves as the visitors looked to capitalise on a brief period of momentum.
A frantic final ten minutes saw both teams rushing end-to-end in search of the breakthrough, and despite a few well-actioned moves, the game ended 0-0 after 95 intensive minutes.
Our Lions Men now have five games remaining in this captivating title race, with Moreton City Excelsior holding the advantage with their game in hand. Peninsula Power and Eastern Suburbs both gave games in hand, and with positive results in those, we could be looking at a highly competitive four-horse race to the Premiership, as only four points would separate the four sides.
We’ll treat each game as a final and compete with everything in our power until the final whistle on the final day.
Our U23s Men rose to second with a commanding 5-2 victory over Moreton City Excelsior’s U23s. Levi Collins and Tressor Christophe struck inside the first twelve minutes to give us an early lead, before Zane North buried our third after the half-hour mark. The visitors snatched a goal right before the break, but Pranav Vallabh responded immediately after the restart to restore our three-goal lead. Moreton City Excelsior scored a penalty on the hour mark, but Freddy Babbage’s last-minute goal ensured we ended the night with a powerful result.
