Thirteen seconds to open the scoring, and our Lions Men battled out a 2-2 draw against Gold Coast Knights in a fast-paced, fiery, and high-intensity contest at Luxury Paints Stadium
Dream starts don’t get much dreamier. Thirteen seconds. Straight from kickoff. And Jackson Hart-Phillips threads the needle from the byline to secure a remarkable opening goal. I hadn’t even finished writing my kickoff tweet yet.

It was an energetic and, honestly, fun opening fifteen minutes. Plenty of chances, free-flowing and improvised, gave us chances to double our early lead. Jackson swung a low cross towards Jerson Lagos at the back post, which was cleared, and Harvey Pope attempted a stunning bicycle kick that glanced inches shy of the top left corner!
Jerson drifted a spinning chip shot towards the top right corner that was palmed over the crossbar desperately, and Tommy Jarrard capitalised in the centre of the box minutes later to send us two goals up. An important touch in the centre of the box, and his reactive effort bounced into the bottom right corner dramatically!

But what looked like a flood-gates opening moment was quickly quashed. Within a minute of conceding, the Knights capitalised on a defensive slip to beat our defence and slot the ball into an empty net via Cody Nancarrow.
Alex Fiechtner pointed a sharp header wide of the left-hand post in response, and Blair Ponting nailed a fierce effort over the crossbar. Then, Gold Coast Knights were awarded a penalty before the break. Jacson Riley dove brilliantly to his right to make the save, but Joel Russell followed up on the rebound and finished into an open net.
A tale of two halves, within one half, and we entered the break trapped at 2-2 under rainfall.
After allowing the first half to descend into frantic, physical, end-to-end carnage, we returned to the field level-headed and focused. An early chance failed to materialise for Sander Griggs, who skipped across two defenders after a pass from Jerson, but couldn’t muster a shot. Alex then saw a sly cross cleared after darting between two defenders on the wing, and Tommy Jarrard made a cinematic sliding challenge on the lip of the box to prevent Knights going one-v-one against Jacson Riley on the hour.
Alex Fiechtner dragged a first-time shot inches wide from a tight angle on the right, and we approached the final ten minutes with a clear desire to find the winner. A dramatic counterattack was sparked late through Jacson, who punched a dangerous cross into the path of Jerson to dart away from a challenge and bear down the heart of the field. His through ball found Luke Broderick out wide, and he rounded the keeper before playing a lateral pass to Alex Fiechtner. Agonisingly, an onrushing defender blocked his shot.
Chances piled on during stoppage time. Rahmat Akbari hooked a diagonal aerial ball into the run of Alex, but his effort was smothered inside the box. Luke Broderick, too, was denied a famous winner, curling a bouncing effort wide of the bottom right corner after slicing inside deftly.
The whistle blew to confirm our frustration. We took one point of the three we were hunting. A difficult start to the season against two long-standing rivals, but nothing that dampens our spirits or raises red flags. We’re just getting started.

Head Coach Dan Barber shared his thoughts on the match as our Lions Men accept their first point of the season, despite wanting more.
“I was disappointed for the playing group. I thought, on reflection of the chances created and the position we got ourselves into in the first half of being up two-nil, we should have done a little bit better to manage the game and take this [result] out.
We let them back into the game, which is obviously our own kind of doing, so disappointed not to capitalise on being two up quite early, and I thought we started really aggressively, scored two really good goals, but a couple of unforced errors, and they’ve crept back into the game, and then a stalemate in the second half.”
Dan commented on how his side adjusted after the break, following what became a chaotic first half.
“It was to restore a sense of calmness, first of all, rightly so, because they scored a couple of goals in quick succession. So we needed to stabilise a little bit and put off on the ball and gauge some control with the ball, and then also to continue to stamp our authority with the ball in terms of our patterns and how we wanted to play.
We thought we could hurt him, and we did that to the point, without pointing the ball in the net, and then without the ball, just trying to nullify their strengths as well. They were quite direct, so we wanted to try and stop that as best as we could.
Listen, we’ve got a really talented bunch of players in here, and the staff have been doing a great job. We’re really prepared and working hard for the games; it’s going to take a little bit of time.
It’s a new group, but I think you can see already from a lot of the performances, including the Pro Series, that we’re in a good space. We just need to keep building in the league and being a little bit more decisive in key moments.”
