OUR LIONS WOMEN FINISH RUNNERS-UP AFTER A PAINFUL DEFEAT IN THE FINAL SECONDS
Brisbane City claimed the Premiership in the 97th minute, defeating our Lions Women 2-1 after an incredible game of football.
The first half was a steady balance, with both sides remaining resolute in defence. Our Lions Women looked confident in possession, playing well from the back and attacking effectively in the wider challenge. Neither side created any clear chances as we approached the interval locked at 0-0.
The second half saw a completely different tempo. Laini Freier broke the deadlock in the 49th minute, guiding a sharp finish across goal and into the bottom left corner.
Meaghan McElligott responded within five minutes, swivelling away from her marker before driving a bouncing strike into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1!

Congratulations to Rob Askew and our Lions Women on an incredible year. It’s a painful way to end our season, but the girls have shown remarkable character and determination across a competitive season.
We played 34 games across this season, fighting our way to two Grand Finals. While we couldn’t get our hands on the silverware, we can hold our heads high and take pride in what we’ve achieved together.
Football is always bigger than results. We will come back stronger in 2025.
