BRISBANE CITY DEFEAT OUR LIONS 3-1 IN A DIFFICULT CLASH AT IMPERIAL CORP STADIUM
Continuing Tuesday evening’s goalless draw against Brisbane City, our Lions Women travelled to Imperial Corp Stadium for a second Brisbane Classico in five days.
The hosts welcomed us to their stadium by scoring immediately, finding the back of the net after Elli Chapple’s initial set-piece save was caught on the rebound and buried in the bottom right corner.
We sought a quick response through Meaghan McElligott, who speared a brave half-volleyed effort over the crossbar from thirty yards. A few crosses questioned the keeper as we tried to force the ball into the box, and Elli Chapple was forced to make a series of straightforward saves down the other end.
Neither side created any deadly chances on goal, both trading possession back and forth in the centre of the park while looking for quick passes out wide.
Meaghan McElligott created our best chance of the game on the half-hour mark, forcing a crucial low save that trickled under the keeper before being smothered desperately.
We entered the break trailing 1-0.
We started with intensity after the restart. Rachel Dudley skewed a slipping effort away from the top right corner, and Shianna Singh saw a driven shot blocked on the edge of the box after a fantastic team move.
Despite our strong start, Brisbane City doubled their advantage with a bullet header into the bottom left corner.
Our Lions Women tried to fight back in the final thirty minutes to no avail. Shianna Singh blasted a first-time effort over the crossbar from the edge of the box, and ten minutes later, the hosts put us three goals down.
With minutes remaining on the clock, Meaghan McElligott rounded the keeper swiftly and gave us a lifeline.

Unfortunately, it was too little, too late, and our Lions Women were forced to accept a 3-1 defeat on the road. We will come back stronger next week!
