Teagan Hugo’s last-minute chip earned our Lions Women a well-deserved point after a tense battle in the Brisbane Classico
After a complicated few weeks of wet-weather postponements, our Lions Women entered the Brisbane Classico having played almost no NPL football in a month, apart from their midweek clash against QAS that saw them win 3-2 via an Amy Gunston hattrick.
Travelling to Spencer Park for another edition of our favourite rivalry, we donned the orange again in search of three points. It was a measured start. Both sides working the ball patiently in search of space to attack.
The first clear chance saw Elisa Karas make an excellent diving save to palm a freekick out of the left side of goal, and Amy Gunston was denied at the back post after a sweeping move saw us move the ball across the box from right to left.
Lauren Spreadborough, in her first start, made a crucial block in the centre of the box as City applied a wave of pressure, and on the stroke of half-time, the hosts were awarded a penalty. Fortunately, their shot struck the post, and we entered the break locked goalless.
Straight off the mark in the second half, and Scarlett Premerl forced a fingertip save with a fierce strike aimed at the roof of the goal from a slender angle!
Another penalty was awarded to City after the hour mark. And this time, there was no mistake. 1-0 to the hosts.
Abby Evetts made a crucial goal-line clearance with less than ten minutes remaining, and in the final minutes, Natalie Tathem played a brilliant first-time long-ball down the heart of the field, with Teagan Hugo running onto the ball and calmly lifting it over the keeper to equalise!
