TWO SECOND-HALF GOALS FOR THE WANDERERS CONDEMNS OUR LIONS WOMEN TO A 2-0 DEFEAT AT BALLINGER PARK
Our Lions Women arrived in Buderim to face an in-form Sunshine Coast Wanderers side. We struggled to create chances in the first half, and their defensive composure was clear from the first kick.
Amy Gunston created our first chance of the game, arriving at the back post to meet a sharp cross. Her effort was saved from a tight angle by the keeper.
While we dominated possession and carried the ball forward effectively in the wider spaces, we struggled to penetrate the Wanderers’ box. A particularly strong spell of possession ended with Shianna Singh guiding a powerful effort wide of the top right corner, and we entered the break locked goalless.
The second half resumed with the same complications, but our Lions Women remained focused on finding the breakthrough.
Our workload was doubled five minutes into the second half, when a looping header from a corner sunk into the top right corner to gift the Sunshine Coast side the lead. Few chances fell our way, and five minutes after the hour, the hosts doubled their advantage with a piercing finish after a swift counterattack.
Meaghan McElligott and Ellen Gett both forced necessary saves from distance as we looked for an avenue back into the game, and Emily Clark made an outstanding diving save to prevent the scoreline from getting away from us.
Despite the late chances and the strong effort to respond, the Sunshine Coast Wanderers held on for a 2-0 victory. We’ll take what we can from this result, and come back stronger next week!
