Our Lions Women were defeated 2-0 by Gold Coast Knights on Tuesday night, despite creating chances at both ends and producing several strong defensive moments throughout the contest.
The hosts looked to settle early, but it was our Lions Women who threatened first. In the 26th minute, Abbey Evetts let fly from distance, forcing the Knights goalkeeper into a comfortable save.
Gold Coast eventually found the breakthrough five minutes before the break through former Lions player Meg McElligott, who gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
Our Lions nearly responded before half-time. Anna Soulsby laid the ball back to Natalie Tathem, whose long-range strike tested the goalkeeper, but the effort was well held as we entered the sheds trailing by one.

We came out after the interval determined to find an equaliser, but Stella Campbell was called into action just after the hour mark, producing a brilliant one-on-one save as she dived to her left to deny what looked a certain goal.
Moments later, however, McElligott doubled the hosts’ advantage with her second of the evening.
Our Lions continued to press. Scarlett Premerl delivered an inviting cross into the area for Abbey Lloyd in the 66th minute, but her effort sailed over the crossbar.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Lauren Costello’s pass from the back released Tonia-Marie Rantucci through on goal. She broke clear of the Knights defence, but her shot drifted narrowly wide of the target.
Campbell continued to stand tall in goal, denying McElligott an 88th-minute hat-trick with another excellent save to keep the scoreline at two.
Despite the result, our Lions Women continued to fight until the final whistle and will take plenty of positives from a determined performance as they look ahead to their next challenge.
