Our Lions Women were forced to accept a goalless draw after failing to break down a defensive Olympic FC outfit at Goodwin Park
Off the back of Tuesday night’s 7-0 victory at Luxury Paints Stadium, our Lions Women travelled away from home for the first time this season, looking to make it three wins in three as they walked onto the pitch against Olympic FC.
There were promising signs early in the half, with Anna Soulsby slicing inside on the edge of the box before curling a firm effort over the crossbar. Abbey Lloyd, in her first start in Lions colours, slipped Scarlett Premerl into space on the left, but her first-time effort was saved. Ten minutes in, and the chances were flowing.
Elli Chapple was forced to make two successive saves at her near post as the hosts looked to capitalise on a brief spell of possession in our defensive third, and a superb bouncing strike from Rachel Dudley forced an uncomfortable save as we advanced up the field in numbers.
Abbey Lloyd sent a rocket towards the top-right corner, but an Olympic body got in the way and caused a corner instead. Rachel Dudley clipped a curling ball between defenders to find Abbey moments later, but her effort was smothered by the keeper. A few chances more, and we entered the break locked level.
It was a physical game, and complicated to carve clear-cut chances as Olympic settled into a low block and tried to hit us in transition. We were almost punished after a deep free kick landed in our box, and a goalmouth scramble was won and cleared by our Lions defence.
A long-range effort from Anna Soulsby deflected nicely, almost looping over the keeper and into the top left corner, but missing the mark by millimetres. Rachel tried her luck from distance, but couldn’t keep the ball down, and an outrageous bicycle-kick from Anna forced a comfortable save!
Amy Gunston directed a sharp header off-target at the back post after a great cross, and despite a slew of late chances on the road, our Lions Women were forced to accept a stalemate on the road. Coming for three points but leaving with one.
