Pengelly and O’Keeffe pick up top honours at our 2022 Senior Gala Awards

Andy Pengelly and Tara O’Keeffe picked up our highest honour, the Mollee Medal at Saturday’s 2022 Lions FC Senior Gala Awards at The W Brisbane.

Following an outstanding season with three senior National Premier Leagues Queensland Premierships, we gathered as a club to celebrate and review the year that 2022 has been.

The night saw numerous awards given and received including the NPL Men, Women and U23’s squads each awarding a golden boot, most consistent and Player of the Year. These awards were also complimented with the NPL Men and Women’s Player of the Future (U18) and NPL Men and Women’s Young Player of the Year (U23).

The 2022 edition of the Lions FC Senior Gala Awards also welcomed the introduction of the NPL Men’s and NPL Women’s Players’ Player Award. The newly introduced Players’ Player award is awarded to the players top of a points tally voted by each player after every game.

With the final awards of the night, The Mollee Medal being awarded to the NPL Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year. A renamed award this season, the Mollee Medal recognises the behind-the-scenes work performed by Ben and Henk Mollee over the club’s 65-year history.

Throughout his time at the club, Henk was a former player in our foundation team in 1957 through to the 70’s and a former chairman of the board for 15 years. He also ran the Coconut Grove for many years.

Furthermore, Ben spent nine years playing for our Senior Men’s First Team, with a brief stint with the Queensland Representative Team. Ben has also been a coach for many years, most notably coached Andy Pengelly during the ages of 13 and 14. From an administrative point of view, Ben has been a board member for the last 15 years, as well as previously sitting as a Junior President.
