LIONS MEN FEND OFF THE JETS ON THE ROAD WHILE OUR LIONS WOMEN SEE OFF THE BULLDOGS AT HOME
Our men showed mettle to fight from behind against a robust Moreton Bay side, defending with composure to secure a vital victory at Wolter Park. Our Lionesses capped off a great weekend of football with a routine win at Luxury Paints Stadium.
LIONS VS MORETON BAY: NPL MEN
A resilient display saw our Lions men strike back after an early blow, with an Andy Pengelly double recovering a necessary three points.
A lively first half saw our Lions chasing the game within minutes, forced behind within five minutes after an energetic start from the hosts.
We created several chances in response to the Jets, with Andy Pengelly breaking even in the 21st minute. A deft header from close range lobbed the keeper at the near post, restoring clarity and changing the momentum in a fast-paced game on the road.
A boot to the head saw Ridenton draw a penalty, with Andy Pengelly nailing the spot-kick into to bottom left corner to flip the script.
From there, the game opened up, with both sides driving down the flanks and creating danger from out wide.
Tommy Jarrard was at his best in the heart of defence, making crucial tackles, vital interceptions and desperate goal-line clearances to protect Borean’s goal.
A late penalty for the hosts threatened to erase our lead, but Borean met the Walters’ strike at the bottom left corner.
From there, we saw out the game, securing a massive victory that sees us move back into fourth and in reach of our rivals.
LIONS VS CAPALABA BULLDOGS: NPL WOMEN
Consistency in the final third and composure under pressure saw our Lions women put the Bulldogs to sleep in a routine day at the office.
The tempo was set within the first 60 seconds, with our Lionesses recovering possession high and Tegan Riding slotting home the match opener before the clock struck one minute.
From there, we settled into the game, moving the ball without creating any deadly chances, only to be punished for our complacency right before the break after a lapse of focus in our own box.
We reset immediately, with Tia Appoo scoring in stoppage time after an initial save to ensure we lead at the interval.
Within two minutes of the restart, Rebecca Kirkup had crossed the ball into the bottom left corner to double our lead, and within three minutes, Tegan Riding had lifted home our fourth in an exemplary start to the half. Meghan McElligott slotted home at the back post to make it five before full-time.
