LIONS MEN LEVEL AT THE DEATH WHILE LIONESSES FALL TO EASTS IN OUR FIRST AWAY GAMES ON THE 2023 CAMPAIGN

A 95th-minute equaliser saw our Lions men escape defeat, and our Lionesses saw their unbeaten streak come to an end in a weekend that saw both sides fail to secure victory.

SUNSHINE COAST WANDERERS VS LIONS: NPL MEN

Our Lions fought back in the final minute to equalise after conceding late in the second half to go behind on the road.

An end-to-end match away against Sunshine Coast Wanderers saw us go into the break level after both sides failed to capitalise on any meaningful challenges.  Despite coming close several times through Andy Pengelly, the visitors drew first blood through Kyan Vanderharst-Bryant firing home on the volley from close range.

With resilience and character on the edge of defeat, our Lions persisted in stoppage time, breaking level through a thunderous Jesse Rigby strike. An intricate through-ball from Matt Ridenton forced a deflection that Rigby ran onto, drilling his right boot through the ball and sending a violent strike into the top right corner off the woodwork.

EASTERN SUBURBS VS LIONS: NPL WOMEN

A remarkable unbeaten run comes to an end on the road against a focused and organised Eastern Suburbs outfit.

With attacking intent from the first kick, Eastern Suburbs rushed into an early lead through Maya Brueckner at the back post. With continuous pressure on our defence, Sofie Persson capitalised on a defensive lapse to slot home in an empty net. Halt-time saw our Lions three down after Sofie Persson rounded Chapple and finished from a slender angle.

Entering the second half with an incredible deficit to overturn, our Lions women shifted into a higher gear, pulling a goal back through Macey Edward and piling on the pressure for the remaining 30 minutes. We struck the woodwork late in the game but could not get a foothold back into the match, falling to a first defeat in 61 games. A historic achievement that will reverberate through Queensland football history for years to come.
