NPLW Round #6: Defeat against Souths

LIONS WOMEN UNABLE TO BOUNCE BACK AFTER A FAST START FROM THE HOSTS

Two goals in the opening twenty minutes did enough damage to see off our Lions Women at Wakerley Park.

Souths United started quickest, creating several close chances in the opening fifteen minutes before taking the lead in the 18th. As the rainfall intensified at Wakerley Park, a low-driven corner from Souths United ricocheted inside the near post to give the hosts the lead.

With immediate momentum, Souths surged down the right flank, cutting the ball into the centre of the box and finding the finish at the back post. Emily Clark was tested several more times in the opening forty-five, with our Lions creating their first meaningful chance on the brink of half-time.

The weather cleared up in the second half, and our Lions Women began increasing the pressure on the Souths defence. A handball claim was denied, while several quick counterattacks were thwarted by an effective sweeper keeper.

Emily Clark made several important saves in the late stages, and Sam DeBien was unlucky not to pull one back in the final moments, with her close-range effort sailing marginally wide.

It wasn’t our best performance on the road, but Souths United mounted a strong defence and created danger in the wider areas of the pitch. We will look to bounce back on Friday night as we return to Luxury Paints Stadium.
